In Austin we’re taking a collective deep breath before diving in to South by Southwest. I’m grateful for a busy first quarter and looking forward to announcing more client projects and news next quarter, too.

Earlier this year, the very successful patron/sponsor program for jazz trumpeter Jeff Lofton led Jeff to perform at the Very Smart Gals party hosted by SueAnn Wade-Course and Lynn Meredith on the 32nd floor at the Four Seasons Residencies. In addition to the great view and swinging jazz, Nicole Davenport of Sugar and Smoke in Fredericksburg amazed everyone with fabulous food, and Christy Pipkin shared info about the Nobelity Project. (Don’t miss The Nobelity Project Artists and Filmmakers Dinner on March 25.) Jeff’s performance was the “thank you” gift for SueAnn’s sponsorship for his 2011 album, “Chasing the Voodoo Down – Live at the Cactus Cafe.” Austin American-Statesman social columnist Michael Barnes covered the article in his Out and About blog, too.

Jeff Lofton’s 1950s Miles Davis Tribute for the Year of Jazz series celebrating KRTU Jazz 91.7 FM in San Antonio’s ten year anniversary and Black History Month received a great review from the San Antonio Express-News. We look forward to taking this show to more cities in 2012 and 2013.

In more personal news, Jeff and I were featured in this story Lovers who dislike Valentine’s Day on the Austin website CultureMap. My favorite quote was from Jeff: “I prefer to get my lovin’ year round.”

Virtuoso jazz trumpeter and composer Jeff Lofton, and pianist Graham Reynolds get 2012′s TEDxAustin event started with a healthy dose of Jeff’s original improvisational jazz inspired by images from photographer Dan Winter and words from attendee applications responding to “What is beyond measure?”

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Jazz trumpeter Jeff Lofton drew a crowd of 550 to the Carver Community Cultural Center in San Antonio on Saturday, February 11, for his 1950s Miles Davis Tribute. The show was part of the Black History Month celebration in KRTU Jazz 91.7 FM‘s ten-year anniversary celebration series, The Year of Jazz. Many thanks to Jim Beal at the San Antonio Express-News for this piece on the event: Lofton adds to KRTU’s jazz fete.

celebrate two years of Sizzlin’ Jazz

Austin - With New Orleans roots and over 26 years in the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin’s first USDA Prime Steak House, locally owned Ruth’s Chris Steak House proudly celebrates two years of Sizzlin’ Jazz in the Lounge with the Jeff Lofton Trio this month. Called a “veritable jazz virtuoso” by NPR-affiliate KUT and “an Austin jazz giant” by music critic Andy Langer, the Jeff Lofton Trio performs every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.Ruth’s Chris Steak House is located off the corner of Sixth Street and Congress Avenue.

The Jeff Lofton Trio includes bassist Chris Jones and drummer Ernie Durawa. Jones is a graduate of the New School of Manhattan who moved to Austin after eight years abroad in Japan. Durawa is a Grammy-winning drummer and also a member of the Texas Tornadoes. Voted “Best Jazz Band” at the ’10-’11 Austin Music Awards at SXSW, Lofton also just made his big screen debut performing original music in the world premiere of the drama “A Swingin’ Trio” at the Austin Film Festival.

Guests at Ruth’s Chris Steak House enjoy the classic ambiance of world-class jazz with their dinner conversations, celebrations or meetings and often stop in the lounge after dinner for a few more songs. The softly lit, warm, wood-paneled lounge with overstuffed chairs provides an intimate listening room. The Lounge is also perfect for networking and socializing with appetizers and drinks, along with great people-watching through the full-glass wall overlooking Sixth Street as it meets Congress Avenue.

Known for supporting the community, Ruth’s Chris Steak House frequently hosts Celebrity Bartender Night, where local or visiting celebrities serve drinks to raise funds and awareness for nonprofits and charity events. Recent Celebrity Bartenders included Nakia, who appeared on the NBC show “The Voice,” Dana Wheeler-Nicholson from Friday Night Lights, Guy Forsythe, Turk Pipkin and Ed Clements.

Since arriving from South Carolina in 2007, Lofton helped raise the profile of jazz in Austin. The Austin American-Statesman featured him as a rising music star in their 2010 Out and About 500: Music list, noting his “jumpstart” to the local jazz scene with “ubiquitous presence and articulate advocacy.” The City of Austin declared January 15, 2009 “Jeff Lofton Day” in Austin, and he was inducted into the Texas Music Museum in 2010. His straight-ahead, bebop album “Jazz to the People,” made the 2009 top albums lists for the Austin Chronicle and KUT.

NPR-affiliate KUT 90.5 FM says of Lofton, “Comparisons are frequently made to Miles Davis – and rightfully so. Lofton’s take on standards frequently astounds, and his originals are equally delicious.” Jeff Lofton’s 1950s Miles Davis Tribute drew a large crowd to One World Theatre in 2010 and then debuted in New York at the Iridium Jazz Club. In February 2012 Lofton takes the tribute to the Carver Museum in San Antonio for KRTU’s Year of Jazz series.

Called “one of Austin’s most innovative creators “ (Gabino Iglesias, AustinPost) Lofton is known for delving into musical challenges. At the Cactus Cafe he’s presented a tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim and a night of Cole Porter.
